Android Sony Walkman prototype gets IFA showing

Sony showed off a Walkman Mobile Entertainment Player on its stand at the IFA consumer electronics show in Berlin.

It was quickly pointed out to us that this was a prototype, but we can see where Sony are headed with this one, and that’s straight up against the iPod touch.
The dedicated Walkman device offers a 4.3-inch display and runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread. As such, it is essentially a phone without the telephone part, but it does at least look to offer you all the goodness of Google, so you’ll be able to access Android Market to download apps to your heart’s content.
Sony’s software reflects what we’ve seen previously on its new tablets - the S and the P - with some of the same features evident in the video player, letting us skip through scenes of a movie and the option to share it with the TV via DLNA.
On the music front, a dedicated Walkman-logoed button on the side launches you straight into the music player, with the option for gesture controls, also seen on Sony's Tablet S, which offers gesture remote control functions.
One interesting feature was the ability to swipe from the album art over into the lyrics, although Sony was coy about where you’d source the lyrics. A Sony agent loitering nearby told us that there wasn’t currently an official delivery method for lyrics, so it appears to be something of a feature in development.

The build was pretty solid and the design was good, but we can’t help feeling that the lack of a camera might raise a few eyebrows, especially given how capable Android is when it comes to sharing images.
A Walkman PMP does muddy the water a little however. We’ve already got a run of Android smartphones from Sony Ericsson - which offer all the same features and more - as well as a line of Walkman devices.
While a dedicated PMP might make sense for Apple with the iPod touch, we’re not as convinced that Android has the same appeal in the most general sense. The iPhone is expensive to own, giving the iPod touch an essential hook in offering iOS, and Apple’s services, in a more affordable package. Android, by contrast, is easier to access at a huge range of price points.
Howard Stringer, Sony president and CEO, made a point of emphasising how Sony was contributing to both entertainment creation and consumption in his opening keynote saying "Sony, we like to think, is where art meets technology… one company makes entertainment and what you need to experience it". Perhaps Sony sees its own Music Unlimited and Video Unlimited services as being strong enough to hook people in.
Of course, you could just get yourself a Sony EricssonXperia Arc S, which is slimmer, lighter and offers you a phone too…

Sony Ericsson may be working on its next flagship, codenamed Nozomi; SK19i cancelled

Rumor has it that a new Sony Ericsson flagship smartphone is baking over at the company's busy kitchen. Codenamed Nozomi, the said device will allegedly pack a 4.3-inch 720p display, which is shaping up to become the next standard among cutting-edge handsets. Furthermore, a 1.4GHz chip will supposedly be ticking under its hood, yet the rumor does not clarify whether it will be of the dual-core kind or not.

However, we are witnessing a bit of a rumor clash here as previous speculations suggested that the flagship spot in Sony Ericcson's portfolio was reserved for the Xperia Duos. As far as the rumors are to be believed, the Sony Ericsson Xperia Duos is to feature a 1.4GHz dual-core processor and a 4.5-inch qHD display.

Of course, all of this is information that has yet to be confirmed by an official source, but if there is at least some truth to it, one possible explanation would be that one of the above handsets is to become  the very best that Sony Ericsson will have to offer, while the other is to take the second spot. Besides that, the rumor does not make it clear when the Nozomi is expected to be announced so it may simply be a handset scheduled for release later in 2012 with the Xperia Duos boasting flagship status for the time being. Earlier leaks have suggested that the Duos, Sony Ericsson's first dual-core handset, may be unveiled as soon as next month.

Oh, there is one more thing that we have to mention. Remember that rumored Sony Ericsson smartphone bearing the SK19i model name? The same source who spilled the beans about the Nozomi says that the device was meant to sit between the Xperia mini pro and the Xperia pro and was not exactly built as a version of the Xperia ray with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. However, we might never know for sure as the tipster also mentions that the company has decided to pull the plug on the handset.

Sony Ericsson to expand Walkman, Xperia phones

While every brand today is innovating to enrich consumer experience in music, gaming and imaging, Sony Ericsson stands out because it combines Sony's entertainment capabilities with the right Android attributes.

Sony Ericsson has often emphasized its big plans for the Asia Pacific region, including India, where it will release a wide range of products that tap mobile trends and have mass appeal.
The company, which created Xperia Play, the world's only PlayStation gaming phone, also plans to add more gaming capabilities to its devices. In an email interaction with Sandeep Budki of 'The Mobile Indian', Prasun Kumar, head of marketing at Sony Ericsson, India, shared his thoughts on what Indian consumers can expect form the company in the coming months.

What kind of innovation in devices, particularly from Sony Ericsson, can mobile users look forward to in the coming months?
Looking closely at some industry trends we understand that consumers, especially the youth, like to indulge in gadgets that give them an immersive experience on-the-go.
In the coming months we plan to expand our flagship range of Walkman and Xperia phones. While the Xperia range will continue to extend the imaging and gaming experiences, we will have new phones for people with active lifestyles. For those who like to stay fit the phone will be pre-loaded with sports apps that enable consumers to easily track their fitness. On the other hand, Walkman will be designed to provide consumers with great music.

Among all the devices innovations implemented by your company which is your all time favorite and why?
My all time favourite innovation would be the Sony features embedded on our Xperia range of phones, especially on Sony Ericsson Xperia arc. What makes it my favourite device is the best imaging experience, thanks to Sony's award winning Exmor R technology. I get to document plays on YouTube and my photo albums on Picasa. What is even better is that the phone can be connected to larger screens such as TVs and computers. And the Exmor R sensor captures movies and stills in low light and turns them into shining epics.

Could you tell us about an innovation failure Sony Ericsson has faced in its phones?
While every brand today is innovating to enrich consumer experience in the music, gaming and imaging space, what makes Sony Ericsson stand out are the added entertainment capabilities that come from Sony, along with the right Android attributes.
Each of our mobile phones has a unique design and added features to appeal to consumers. Sometimes, consumers take time to understand the technology well and then fall for it. Some of our phones such as Xperia Play have been revolutionary devices and have appealed to consumers after engagement with the phone.

What is the one thing you are hooked to on your mobile and what's the reason for it?
Currently, I am using a Sony Ericsson Xperia Play which makes me spend most of my free time playing on the phone. The phone is a complete gaming trip as it combines Sony's PlayStation capabilities with Android (Gingerbread 2.3) market place, where I can make a choice from over 90 titles. Recently, I have been traveling a lot for work. Xperia Play has been like a stress buster at airports and during work breaks.

What are the initiatives taken to popularize Sony Ericsson W8?
We are happy to inform our users that we very recently launched the world's first Walkman Smartphone, Sony Ericsson W8. The phone is absolutely a delight to music lovers and is filled with surprises including the FM Moment and Share Moment applications, designed just for India; and a bundled-in speaker, FM string and even snap-on colours to choose from.
To make the music experience even better, Sony Ericsson has partnered with Reliance Communications to make the W8 available through an innovative '100per cent money back' offer that will be available on the Reliance 3G network to all mobile customers.
Customers get to access over 50 songs and above 12 videos pre-loaded on the phone for free. In addition, customers also get a free Reliance 3G SIM with deep discounts on pre-paid offers for 12 months and 100 per cent money back on post-paid offers over a period of 24 months.
