Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray Is An iPhone Contender, Vodafone Exclusive

Vodafone will be getting the Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray exclusively by this month’s end, and is a value-for-money alternative against Apple’s iPhone.

The Xperia Ray will be powered by similar hardware to the iPhone 4, running a 1GHz Scorpion processor, 512MB of RAM and an Adreno 205 GPU. For those who aren't fluent in tech, that's some pretty decent hardware, especially if this phone is priced on the low end.

Admittedly the screen isn't as crystal clear as the premium priced iPhone. Stretching 3.3 inches, it uses similar capacitive touch screen technology and showcases 16 million colours. More impressive yet is its Bravia Mobile engine. Essentially the technology is derived from Sony's Bravia TVs and better contrasts vibrant colours with strong blacks for crisp video and picture playback.

Ray will run Android 2.3 Gingerbread, tweaked to accommodate some of Sony Ericsson's social networking and multimedia software. Including Sony's proprietary Timescape applications, Ray will combine all of your interactions, including social networking (Facebook, Twitter, 4square), calls, messages and also emails, into one pleasing graphic interface.

Camera-wise, Ray might even have it over Apple's iPhone. It features an 8MP (3,264 x 2,448) shooter, although with a light (and not a flash). There is a front facing camera too, and it can pull off HD video with 720p recording. Elevating the experience is Sony's Exmor R sensor, which derives from their professional camera line and filters light in dim areas to produce well coloured images.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray priced in India at INR 19K

Sony Ericsson might not have declared the pricing details of Xperia Ray in India, but thanks to the online retail store Flipkart, price of the smartphone has been revealed.

According to a “coming soon” listing on the site, Xperia Ray will sell for INR 18,995, which seems to be a decent pricing for a smartphone, which comes with 1GHz processor, 8.1MP camera, VGA secondary cam and 3.3 display with Mobile Bravia Engine.
Sony Ericsson India has earlier announced Xperia Ray along with Xperia Active at the recently help Qualcomm India On but did not declare the prices of either of the smartphones. The exact availability date is still to be disclosed.

Xperia Ray and Active expected tomorrow

Xperia Active is aimed at health freaks. It has features like a heart and pulse rate monitor; while Xperia Ray is targeted at more style conscious consumers.

Sony Ericsson will launch two new smartphones in India on Tuesday. These devices are part of its Xperia brand. Both phones were announced in June during the CommunicAsia 2011 event in Singapore and feature the latest Android 2.3 operating system along with a 1 GHz processor. With this, the Xperia brand will include nine phones and there are more to come.

Xperia Active has a 3 inch reality display with Sony's Mobile Bravia display technology, and a 5 megapixel camera with HD video functionality. It is a dust and water resistant phone, and incorporates wet finger tracking which means that the phone works perfectly even when the screen or the user's fingers are wet.
Sony Ericsson's Xperia Active is for health conscious people and comes pre-loaded with sports apps that enable consumers to easily track their fitness levels. Users can set their ideal training route using the built-in GPS, barometer and compass. The on-screen heart rate and pulse can be monitored in real time (enabled by ANT+ wireless networking technology), while the iMapMyFitness app can monitor day to day performance. In addition, Facebook inside Xperia allows consumers to share their progress and experiences with friends.
The phone comes with a changeable soft-touch back cover, and detachable ear hooks for the portable handsfree that ensure the earpieces remain in place while you are running. It is packed with a wrist strap and arm case for use during workouts as well.
The phone is not the lightest — it weighs about 110.8 grams. Besides, the battery has a capacity of 1,200 mAh, which is measly for smartphones. We hope that Sony Ericsson has some tricks up its sleeve to make the battery last a full day.

The other new Sony phone is called Xperia Ray. Aimed more at style conscious consumers the phone comes with a sleek aluminium frame, reality display, mobile Bravia engine, and a 3.3 inch screen.
Xperia Ray, which also runs on the latest Android platform for smartphones (Gingerbread 2.3), is powered by a 1 GHz processor. The phone is quite sleek, with a thickness of 9.4 mm, and it looks gorgeous.
Besides, it has an 8.1 megapixel camera with Exmor R Sony camera technology and HD video functionality, which means that the camera will be one of the best, if not the best, in its class.
Xperia Ray incorporates a front facing camera and a scratch resistant screen with excellent resolution and brightness, and integrated touch keys. The phone is light at just 100 grams. All the other bells and whistles of the smartphone such as WiFi, 3G, Bluetoothand DLNAare all present.
Sony Ericsson has not announced the prices of its devices but we think they would cost between Rs 15,000-20,000.

Sony Ericsson may be working on its next flagship, codenamed Nozomi; SK19i cancelled

Rumor has it that a new Sony Ericsson flagship smartphone is baking over at the company's busy kitchen. Codenamed Nozomi, the said device will allegedly pack a 4.3-inch 720p display, which is shaping up to become the next standard among cutting-edge handsets. Furthermore, a 1.4GHz chip will supposedly be ticking under its hood, yet the rumor does not clarify whether it will be of the dual-core kind or not.

However, we are witnessing a bit of a rumor clash here as previous speculations suggested that the flagship spot in Sony Ericcson's portfolio was reserved for the Xperia Duos. As far as the rumors are to be believed, the Sony Ericsson Xperia Duos is to feature a 1.4GHz dual-core processor and a 4.5-inch qHD display.

Of course, all of this is information that has yet to be confirmed by an official source, but if there is at least some truth to it, one possible explanation would be that one of the above handsets is to become  the very best that Sony Ericsson will have to offer, while the other is to take the second spot. Besides that, the rumor does not make it clear when the Nozomi is expected to be announced so it may simply be a handset scheduled for release later in 2012 with the Xperia Duos boasting flagship status for the time being. Earlier leaks have suggested that the Duos, Sony Ericsson's first dual-core handset, may be unveiled as soon as next month.

Oh, there is one more thing that we have to mention. Remember that rumored Sony Ericsson smartphone bearing the SK19i model name? The same source who spilled the beans about the Nozomi says that the device was meant to sit between the Xperia mini pro and the Xperia pro and was not exactly built as a version of the Xperia ray with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. However, we might never know for sure as the tipster also mentions that the company has decided to pull the plug on the handset.

Sony Ericsson to expand Walkman, Xperia phones

What kind of innovation in devices, particularly from Sony Ericsson, can mobile users look forward to in the coming months?
Looking closely at some industry trends we understand that consumers, especially the youth, like to indulge in gadgets that give them an immersive experience on-the-go.
In the coming months we plan to expand our flagship range of Walkman and Xperia phones. While the Xperia range will continue to extend the imaging and gaming experiences, we will have new phones for people with active lifestyles. For those who like to stay fit the phone will be pre-loaded with sports apps that enable consumers to easily track their fitness. On the other hand, Walkman will be designed to provide consumers with great music.

Among all the devices innovations implemented by your company which is your all time favorite and why?
My all time favourite innovation would be the Sony features embedded on our Xperia range of phones, especially on Sony Ericsson Xperia arc. What makes it my favourite device is the best imaging experience, thanks to Sony's award winning Exmor R technology. I get to document plays on YouTube and my photo albums on Picasa. What is even better is that the phone can be connected to larger screens such as TVs and computers. And the Exmor R sensor captures movies and stills in low light and turns them into shining epics.

Could you tell us about an innovation failure Sony Ericsson has faced in its phones?
While every brand today is innovating to enrich consumer experience in the music, gaming and imaging space, what makes Sony Ericsson stand out are the added entertainment capabilities that come from Sony, along with the right Android attributes.
Each of our mobile phones has a unique design and added features to appeal to consumers. Sometimes, consumers take time to understand the technology well and then fall for it. Some of our phones such as Xperia Play have been revolutionary devices and have appealed to consumers after engagement with the phone.

What is the one thing you are hooked to on your mobile and what's the reason for it?
Currently, I am using a Sony Ericsson Xperia Play which makes me spend most of my free time playing on the phone. The phone is a complete gaming trip as it combines Sony's PlayStation capabilities with Android (Gingerbread 2.3) market place, where I can make a choice from over 90 titles. Recently, I have been traveling a lot for work. Xperia Play has been like a stress buster at airports and during work breaks.

What are the initiatives taken to popularize Sony Ericsson W8?
