Sony Ericsson says there's no need for another Xperia Play

Sony Ericsson has said that there's no need to make a sequel to its gaming phone, the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, stating that the Play's hardware is more than capable of wrassling with powerful new mobiles like the Samsung Galaxy S2.

In an interview with Eurogamer, a Sony Ericsson exec said, "This device, with the GPU integration, has been optimised for gameplay."
"It's not going to be outperformed that quickly."
We agree with Sony Ericsson when it says that it doesn't need to make a new version of the Play, and not just because having suffered through the first version, the thought of being subjected to a second Play makes our kidneys shrivel up in fear...

Software woes
The problem with the Xperia Play isn't the hardware. In fact, apart from a slightly dim screen, we were impressed with the comfortable physical controls and overall smoothness of the interface. The problem was the software, which felt rushed and inconsistent, with nary a decent downloadable game in sight. We heard that not one of the Play's launch titles had managed to hit 1,000 downloads.
Recently the Xperia Play nabbed Minecraft Pocket Edition, with the block-busting indie game optimised for the phone's gaming controls. Minecraft will be coming out on other Android phones soon enough, but a period of exclusivity could make the Play slightly more tempting.
With the iPhone 5 looming large, we suspect the temptation exists for mobile manufacturers to rush out rival phones with slightly meatier specs. But increasingly the worth of a gadget isn't determined by its processor or port selection, but by the amount of compelling apps and software you can download for it.
Fingers crossed Sony Ericsson stays true to the plan and sticks some decent games on the Play, rather than just building another phone.

Sony Ericsson may be working on its next flagship, codenamed Nozomi; SK19i cancelled

Rumor has it that a new Sony Ericsson flagship smartphone is baking over at the company's busy kitchen. Codenamed Nozomi, the said device will allegedly pack a 4.3-inch 720p display, which is shaping up to become the next standard among cutting-edge handsets. Furthermore, a 1.4GHz chip will supposedly be ticking under its hood, yet the rumor does not clarify whether it will be of the dual-core kind or not.

However, we are witnessing a bit of a rumor clash here as previous speculations suggested that the flagship spot in Sony Ericcson's portfolio was reserved for the Xperia Duos. As far as the rumors are to be believed, the Sony Ericsson Xperia Duos is to feature a 1.4GHz dual-core processor and a 4.5-inch qHD display.

Of course, all of this is information that has yet to be confirmed by an official source, but if there is at least some truth to it, one possible explanation would be that one of the above handsets is to become  the very best that Sony Ericsson will have to offer, while the other is to take the second spot. Besides that, the rumor does not make it clear when the Nozomi is expected to be announced so it may simply be a handset scheduled for release later in 2012 with the Xperia Duos boasting flagship status for the time being. Earlier leaks have suggested that the Duos, Sony Ericsson's first dual-core handset, may be unveiled as soon as next month.

Oh, there is one more thing that we have to mention. Remember that rumored Sony Ericsson smartphone bearing the SK19i model name? The same source who spilled the beans about the Nozomi says that the device was meant to sit between the Xperia mini pro and the Xperia pro and was not exactly built as a version of the Xperia ray with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. However, we might never know for sure as the tipster also mentions that the company has decided to pull the plug on the handset.

Xperia™ PLAY Hits the Stores (Full Games)

Now XPERIATM PLAY has hit the stores in some markets and there’s a press-release out with all the details – you can find that here.
Many more markets are added over the coming weeks.
I’ve also seen that there are some reviews out already and I’m glad to see that they all seem to be very positive.
(I’ve seen several confusing RAM and storage memory numbers though and would like to clarify. Both XPERIATM arc and XPERIATM PLAY do have 512 MB of RAM. The other numbers seen such as 320MB , 400 MB etc describe the amount of free storage memory in the phone.)
Back to the subject of the day – Xperia PLAY is now shipping and the press release also outlines the games available at launch.
One really nice thing about XperiaTM PLAY as a platform for game developers is it being a fully fledged Android smartphone which really can boost the amount of available games. There’s already lots of games out there for Android and most game developers see it as very important platform for them.
Adding support for the unique game pad of the XperiaTM PLAY is also something that we see more and more of them working on. From a development perspective it’s really easy as described in this article on our developer world blog already. Just head over there if you’re a developer and want to optimize your games for XperiaTM PLAY.
From a gaming perspective this of course opens up to an even bigger world of available games and we see lots of games optimized for XperiaTM PLAY becoming available already now at launch.
To further help you in finding games that are optimized for XPERIATM PLAY we have created the “XPERIATM PLAY Launcher” that is included in the phone and starts automatically when you slide out the game pad. As shown in the picture above it shows you the optimized games you have installed. It also highlights optimized games available for download so that you as a consumer don’t have to have concerns if a game will use the new features unique to XPERIATM PLAY or not.
Here are some of the highlighted games as described in the press release:
  • Assassins Creed Altair’s Chronicles HD  – one of the most popular gaming franchises, with action, puzzles and stealth gameplay set in the Middle East of the Crusades
  • Need for Speed – Grab the wheel of the fastest, hottest, and most powerful cars in the world. One of the most successful video game franchises of all time.
  • Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell– The latest instalment in this key franchise. Special Forces operative and renegade Sam Fisher returns to fight a corrupt secret agency.
  • Dungeon Defenders Second Wave – stunning graphics, intense gameplay and exclusive on Xperia PLAY.
  • Gun Bros – choose your weapon and join the ‘Freakishly Rugged’ action heroes Percy and Francis Gun as they take on a terrifying menagerie of alien beings.
  • Galaxy on Fire 2 – escape into space with hours of deep gameplay and mind blowing graphics in this space exploration game.
  • Guns ‘n’ Glory – you lead a gang of bandits in this popular and award-winning casual tower defence game with a hilarious western theme.
  • Worms – send your worm platoons into battle in this award-winning turn-based strategy game.
  • Zenonia 2 – The lost memories – Classic and popular RPG. Numerous quests following an epic storyline.
  • Backstab – An epic 3rd person pirate adventure that incorporates intense sword fights and other dynamic combat modes. Launching on April 14th exclusively on Xperia™ PLAY.
  • N.O.V.A.2 – Awesome graphics, intense multiplayer gameplay, this First-Person Shooter makes its Android debut exclusively on Xperia PLAY.
In addition Sony Ericsson is happy to confirm that Asphalt 6 – the latest instalment of one of the leading and top-selling racing games will be available for free exclusively on Xperia™ PLAY.
But that’s only some of the highlights. There’s already now much much more. The very open eco-system of Android combined with the easy ways of adding support for the game pad really makes this just the beginning of what’s to come!
There is also a range of PlayStation® original games available at launch (in selected markets initially). These are comprised of a pre-install of the PS One classic Crash Bandicoot* and a further 5 PlayStation® original games available to download via the PlayStation® pocket application in Xperia™ PLAY.
  • Cool Boarders 2 – Time to pick up that snowboard again and rip through the snow with 16 intense racetracks
